Spiral Coast, 2016
Book structure, concept and design by Pilar Castillo.
10.25” x 7.5” publication design.
Spiral Coast is a multi-media work interrogating the value system of colonial era plantation economy. Examining the iconography of labor, wealth, and power, I developed a visual code from the process of cutting and weaving paper. Inspired by the work of artist Kara Walker, these paper crafted symbols and motifs construct a visual language. Consisting of a paper-cut-out series of collages, incorporating raw sugar on vintage plantation photographs to create texture and context, including hand painted elements on cotton handkerchiefs. The black-sand-paper cover itself is a cutout representing machetes as a symbol of unity, labor and revolution.
