Plantation to Paradise, Designing the Caribbean/Arrivals, 2018
Postcard series, concept and design by Pilar Castillo.
Each 4.25” x 5.5” postcard series.
The Arrivals postcard series (10 total) is a counterpoint to the quintessential travel souvenir; highlighting instead the disparity between the millions of tourist arrivals, that in most
cases far exceed the local population. The geographic nature of the series focuses on locating the most touristed Caribbean countries, featuring related maps and data, colonial history, local population, tourist arrivals, and a list of the indigenous peoples of the region. The graphic nature of the series is intentionally colorful and decorative, to draw in the casual viewer. The series poses a direct confrontation to the inherent exploitative nature of tourism industry practices; from the sheer number of tourist arrivals that affect access
to local resources, while dominating local economies to depend on the tourist dollar.
