CARIBBEAN LIT! Legend and Literature, Oral Tradition and the Written Word, 2016
Book structure, concept and design by Pilar Castillo.
11” x 7.75” publication design.
CARIBBEAN LIT!LIT!LIT! is a book of affirmation, in particular to highlight the Creole language spoken as a tongue born out of resilience and survival. Featuring a compilation of gothic to contemporary texts written about and from the Caribbean. Including manuscripts from early explorers to folklore in which Caribbean peoples recorded their own history; relying on alternative forms of recorded memory, from oral tradition, song, and dance. Selected texts vary from interviews to dissertations, including proverbs, folklore, dub poetry, and reggae lyrics. Juxtaposing English, Spanish and Creole language to represent a collision of cultures as a metaphor for Caribbean identity. In the editing process, I began to interpret the content within the structure of the text and typographic choices.
